Yes, sir, I'll have another - Bavaria, that is.

Erik and I have been to Germany.  But we have not BEEN to Germany.  Although our experiences were quite different (Erik maintains it was the worst day of his life, while I can only giggle about the hours I spent there) our time in Germany, in it's totality, is very much alike.  We both went to Oktoberfest in Munich.  A certain something you must do when studying abroad in Europe.

It has been called the drunken Disneyland.  I was told that I would be attending a "quiet" Oktobefest, with only 6 million attending that year.  To me, a place where I can sit, sway, sing and smile, surrounded by music, and hefty beer wenches showering me with more and more beer ... in those steins, oh the steins - one liter of absolute worth-the-hangover goodness - well, that's heaven, my friends.  By the second liter, I bought and was donning a keg hat. While I swore to take pictures after each stein of beer, I only remembered after the first three.  It was chilly, but perfect for Fall day drinking.  I fond memory of mine.

Erik, on the other hand, recalls his time in Oktoberfest as, if you can believe it, the worst day of his life.  His group got there late, in the evening.  The key, which I suppose he wasn't told, is to get there early.  (This would be their first mistake)  As soon as they got there, they crammed themselves into a beer tent (second mistake - the open air is much more lively and comfortable), and waited for beer.  What was most upsetting was the rain that came soon after their arrival, he says.  Being under a tent, afterall, was probably a good idea.  He claims that Oktoberfest is overrated.

This difference of opinion is very delicate, but, we will get through it.

This time around, we are GOING to Germany.  For ten days!  We were going to head to Switzerland, but after taking an honest look at our itinerary, we committed more of our time in old Bavaria.

We bought a Eurorail pass for three countries and five (non consecutive) days of travel.  It will be perfect for us.

What an exciting way to begin our German experience by starting in the captial, Berlin.  We will take a six hour train ride from Prague to Berlin.  Our hotel, Tryp Berlin Mitte by Wyndham, is almost brand new.  It is in an exciting area and very close to public transportation.

We have very few set plans, but we will see what is left of The Berlin Wall.

Next on the books - Heidelberg, Germany.  What a charming city.  It is also where I will spend my 30th birthday! Our hotel is lovely!  Thanks to our good friend Rich, who used to live here, we found a fantastic deal at Hotel Zum Ritter (which also happens to be a destination on the walking tours!)

Our plan is no plans, but we will definitely embark on a walking tour or a Rhine River tour to see the ancient homes, castles and romantic palaces.

Finally, we go back to where we have both been.  This time, together.  We will stay in Munich for three nights and four days.  We will hang our hats at Hotel Bristol. The hotel is located in the heart of the city center and is just blocks away from Old Town.

Lots to do in Munich, which is why we will spend the majority of our time there.  This will include a twenty minute train ride to Dacchau and a lot of time walking around the city.

Munich will complete our tour of Germany.  Three cities, ten days, beautiful countryside, by train, in between.  Oh, Bavaria, we cannot wait!

Cheers,
Kate & Erik

A-Ha! Praha!

PRAGUE!

Our trip to the sixth-most visited city in Europe will be the first for both Erik and I.  It was always on my "to-do in Europe" list, but, somehow, I ran out of time and money.  My priorities were a slightly different then ... I chose many pints and my flatmates in London over one last long weekend away.  If given the choice, I would not change a thing.  We are very excited about this leg of our trip as it will be the first time we will truly explore together .... we will use Erik's sense of direction and my high tolerance for alcohol to navigate this wonderful place.

Erik deserves some credit here, as I've found he is one savvy accomodations hunter.  He manages to search ten different websites to find the best price and as close to my preferred destination as he can get.  I sit close by, watching and "heckling" as he calls it, while I remind him this is our "once in a lifetime" chance ... why not spend a little more and be right in the thick of it all.  He re-sets the search criteria and BOOM ... always finds just the right spot.

The Hotel Sonata is where we will stay for three fabulous nights in Prague!  Perfect in price and location. Job well done, E!

There are many reasons to be excited about touring this loved-by-so-many city.  It's the largest and the capital city of the Czech Republic, offering much to see and much to do.  Many reasons to go and many, for me anyway, reasons to stay?????  Here are a few highlights.....

1) The Charles Bridge

2) Prague Castle

3) Prague Jewish Quarter Josefov

Clearly, I could go on... but we will wait to share OUR pictures, OUR stories and OUR adventure!

The plan:  one way tickets from London's Heathrow to Prague on Saturday.  A very early flight in London means a very early morning wake up call - that, I remember.  But, that just means more time in lovely Prague!

A-Ha to Praha!

Cheers,
Kate & Erik

Across the Pond

LONDON!  I talked Erik into staying in London for not one, but two nights!  How could we enjoy it with just one day?  I had five months there and still didn't see half ...  Thanks to Priceline and Erik being a bettin' man, we got the Marriott - London, Maida Vale for just $100 per night!  The description reads:  "Located in the charming Maida Vale neighbourhood, The London Marriott Hotel Maida Vale is an ideal base to visit Lords Cricket Ground, Abbey Road Studios .... "

What they haven't added is how close we will be to what was once my flat.  The flat I shared with five of my closest friends for five life changing months.  Five friends - spread out, now, all over the place.  Deena (and her husband Jordan) live in San Fran, Moon (and her husband Sharkey) live in Albany, NY, Katie lives in Portland, ME, Saara (and husband Kieran) are in Trinidad and Sasha (and fiance Rick) are in Orlando.  Since our time in London we have been blessed with opportunities to see one another.... for Deena & Jordan's wedding in Chicago (2010), Saara & Kieran's wedding in Trinidad (2009), Moon & Sharkey's wedding on Staats Island, NY (2008). Living in NYC gave me ample opportunity to spend time in Albany and Portland, ME.  Sasha had a law internship in NYC for a few summers which enabled us to spend time together.... and Saara and her sister Sofs came to stay with me in Brooklyn, a few times, as well.  We've been blessed with time and opportunity to continue our friendship, which has, undoubtedly, enriched my life.

Here are a few pics of us recently .....

And... the wedding night ....  (2010)
It would be wrong of me to not include a picture of Erik in this post ... right?  He did look handsome in his tux .....

I digress.....  LONDON!  I haven't been back since 2002.  That's insane.  Too long.  I cannot wait for this leg of our trip... such a walk down memory lane, but a new beginning too - what an experience to share this place, such a piece of my heart, with the man I love.

Cheers,
Kate (and Erik)

FINALLY! The official approval!

It's official.  Erik has been approved for our trip to Europe in April/May!  I've been in the clear for a couple weeks.  I recently accepted an offer to join a new department.  That acceptance included, on my end, a caveat "I have something planned this spring ....." but, to my delight, it was immediately approved.  So, for two weeks we waited for Erik's approval to join me on our trip (yes, I'd go without him).  Honestly, we've been waiting for longer than just two weeks ....

Let's start from the beginning ..... in September 2010, Erik and I began talking about taking a trip.  A substantial trip.  A trip of a lifetime ... you know, one of those.  We thought there would be no issues with our company because, honestly, we'd watched numerous individuals in our department do exactly what we were about to propose.  But, we'd be different - we were going to offer over six months notice, an offer to create a contingency plan and dedicate time to make little to no impact to the department.  A sure and resounding YES!  Right?  NO.  Well, it was "No for now."

Erik, the professional he is, calmly thanked them for their time, stated he understood where they were coming from and said he looked forward to revisiting the conversation in 2011.  I, on the other hand, the fiery redhead I tend to be, outrageously spun off the names of the other associates in our department who were approved to do exactly what we had proposed with no notice and with major impact to the department ... I thought by my pointing out this unjust inconsistency they would definitely see things my way.  It wasn't so.  I was, well, defeated.

Luckily, Erik is a man that can see the silver lining.  He discovered cheap travel insurance and bought it.  That night we booked our flight to Amsterdam.  We were pressing on.  And, even if he wasn't going to show them that he was disappointed and on my side ... he was showing me.

Fast forward four months.  I have a different job (immediate approval) and Erik has been approved....  we are going!

First stop ... and our longest stop:  Amsterdam!  We fly in on Wednesday, April 13th.
We will stay in Amsterdam in an amazing canal apartment for two full weeks!  Unbelievable.

The rest of our trip is beginning to shape up ... but for now, it's on scrap paper, in discussions and in our dreams.... we have two months to book the rest of our trip we will begin to do so this week.

Our goal, throughout our trip, is to capture and share our adventure with friends and loved ones ....  a way for you to be there with us.

Cheers,
Kate & Erik
